Ovarian fibroma
OVERVIEW
What is ovarian fibroma?
Ovarian fibroma (fibroma) is a type of sex cord-stromal tumor among ovarian non-epithelial tumors. It is a benign ovarian tumor. Patients may discover a pelvic mass during examinations, and surgical removal is generally the preferred treatment with a favorable prognosis.
Is ovarian fibroma common in daily life?
Ovarian sex cord-stromal tumors are rare, with ovarian fibromas accounting for 2% to 5% of all ovarian tumors.
Which groups are more likely to develop ovarian fibroma?
Ovarian fibromas are more commonly found in postmenopausal women.
SYMPTOMS
What are the common clinical manifestations of ovarian fibroma?
The clinical manifestations of ovarian fibroma are similar to those of other ovarian tumors, mainly detected through imaging examinations or pelvic masses found during physical examinations, mostly unilateral. Fibromas do not secrete hormones.
Some ovarian fibromas accompanied by ascites and/or pleural effusion are called Meigs syndrome. After surgical removal of the tumor, the ascites and pleural effusion may resolve spontaneously.
CAUSES
What are the causes of ovarian fibroma?
Ovarian fibromas originate from the dividing organelles of cells that normally produce oocytes, but the exact pathogenesis and causes remain unclear.
Is ovarian fibroma hereditary?
The genetic basis of ovarian fibroma is still under research, and there is no definitive conclusion at present.
Is ovarian fibrocystic tumor contagious?
Ovarian fibromas are not associated with infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites, and therefore are not contagious.
DIAGNOSIS
What tests are generally required for ovarian fibroma?
-
Serum tumor marker tests: To differentiate from other hormone-producing ovarian tumors.
-
Imaging tests such as uterine adnexal ultrasound, pelvic MRI, and chest X-ray can detect masses in the adnexal region, assess the size, shape, and blood flow signals of the mass, and determine the presence of abdominal or pleural effusion.
-
Gynecological examination: The mass in the adnexal region feels firm, solid, and smooth to the touch.
-
The final diagnosis is based on the pathological examination of the surgical specimen.
What diseases should ovarian fibroma be differentiated from?
The diagnosis of ovarian fibroma should be differentiated from other ovarian tumors, such as ovarian epithelial tumors and other types of sex cord-stromal tumors, through postoperative pathological diagnosis.
TREATMENT
Which department should I visit for ovarian fibroma?
Choose gynecology or obstetrics and gynecology.
How should ovarian fibroma be treated?
Ovarian fibroma requires surgical removal. The most common treatment is unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. If the patient wishes to preserve the ovary, ovarian cystectomy with complete removal of fibroma tissue may be performed.
DIET & LIFESTYLE
What should patients with ovarian fibroma pay attention to in daily life?
Ovarian fibroma is a benign tumor. No additional treatment is required after removal, and regular gynecological check-ups are sufficient.
PREVENTION
Can Ovarian Fibroma Be Prevented?
Currently, the exact pathogenesis of ovarian fibroma is not fully understood, and there is no effective method to prevent its occurrence. Regular gynecological check-ups are recommended for early detection and treatment.
